SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn with KC Cole
DESCRIPTION:This Spring\, UW Honors will host an exciting series of Lunch & Learn conversations in the Honors suite (MGH 211). These casual events aim to foster lively discussion and community connection. We encourage you to bring your lunch and take an hour away from the chaos of Spring quarter to eat and chat about interesting topics with your Honors community. \nIn conversation with UW Honors Program Director\, Dr. Stephanie Smallwood\, science writer and author of best-selling books on math and physics KC Cole will continue a dialogue begun last fall at the Honors Global Challenges: Interdisciplinary Thinking event\, where KC was a featured speaker on the theme “Public Trust in Science and Why It Matters.” \nDrawing on her experience as writer and editor for national magazines and newspapers\, KC learned first hand how scientific knowledge intersects with public understanding\, civic life\, and shared values. This Lunch & Learn offers an opportunity to return to and deepen that conversation— this time with a particular focus on how science can help us think about meaning\, ethics\, and responsibility in an uncertain world. \nKC recently published the opinion essay “A light in the dark: Finding the good in the natural world\,” which asks how science informs our values and how attention to the natural world can shape the way we understand goodness\, connection\, and community. The essay grows directly out of her Honors course\, “The Science of Human Values\,” which serves as a foundation for this interdisciplinary conversation. \nJoin us for a thoughtful\, wide-ranging discussion at the intersection of science\, humanities\, and public life\, along with engaging conversation and community. Please RSVP here.

SUMMARY:"A Larger Freedom" Public Lecture with Honors
DESCRIPTION:UW Honors Director\, Professor Stephanie Smallwood\, is excited to attend the “A Larger Freedom: Multiracial Democracy and the Radical Reconstruction of the United States with Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor” lecture with a group of Honors students!  \nIf you’d like to attend with the Honors group\, please fill out this form. Please plan to meet in the Honors suite by 5:30 pm on Thursday\, April 30th. The event takes place at Town Hall Seattle at 6:30 PM. \nThis lecture delves into the enduring struggle for democracy in the United States\, challenging the notion that democratic backsliding began with the 2024 presidential election. Instead\, it traces the deeper historical and structural forces that have long shaped—and strained—American democratic institutions.  \nThrough a critical examination of evidence pointing to democratic erosion\, the lecture will explore what it truly means to live in a democratic society. What are the warning signs of decline? Who is most affected when democracy falters? And most importantly\, how can democracy be safeguarded and made inclusive of all?  \nThese questions form the foundation of a timely and urgent conversation about the future of democracy in America.

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn with Michelle Koutnik
DESCRIPTION:Mary Gates Hall\, Suite 211Free and open to the UW community –  please register here \nIn conversation with UW Honors Program Assistant Director\, Brook Kelly\, Professor Michelle Koutnik will draw from nearly 20 years of experience teaching and researching on the Greenland Ice Sheet and the Arctic to address the need for an integrated understanding of historical and contemporary contexts of environmental\, socioeconomic\, cultural\, and political changes in the Arctic region.  \nSuch an approach is critical in the current moment when recurring threats by the US to take over Greenland have significantly damaged the alliance and trust the US has historically had with Greenland\, Denmark\, and through NATO\, while also creating day-to-day fear and uncertainty for Greenlanders. If making these threats is not in the interest of Americans\, and acting upon them would be very damaging\, what can we do in this current moment?  \nThe Arctic is a critical region for national and international security\, and circumpolar forums for dialogue and shared decision making already exist. Scientific research is strongly collaborative across nations. How can we advocate for centering cooperation and respect when addressing challenges and assessing opportunities in the Arctic? \nDr. Koutnik looks forward to discussing these vital questions with Brook\, Honors students\, and others who attend and join the conversation.

SUMMARY:Neal Dempsey Visit
DESCRIPTION:Join us for entrepreneur Neal Dempsey’s annual visit to UW Honors! \n\n\n\nNeal Dempsey is a seasoned Silicon Valley venture capitalist and Triple Husky. He’s made a huge impact on UW Athletics\, The Henry\, the Honors Program\, Foster School of Business\, and our whole campus. \nNeal is a regular speaker\, author\, and sometimes lecturer at the University of Washington. For the past 28 years\, the Dempsey Startup Competition has provided a real-world experience for student entrepreneurs to promote their ideas and engage with the entrepreneurial community around new venture creation. Neal’s love of mentoring also led him to establish the Neal’s Running Start program\, which brings entrepreneurs from around the world to Silicon Valley for an intensive mentorship program with Neal and his colleagues. \n\n\nNeal is a longtime supporter of UW Honors\, and he loves meeting with Interdisciplinary and Departmental Honors students from all majors to encourage you to embrace two values he thinks are important for success\, no matter your professional goals or career path: being unafraid to take risks and welcoming failure as an opportunity for growth.  \nSpace is limited!
