  Where do you expect to be...

  One day after graduating?

  I will be celebrating with friends and family at Golden Gardens Park. Then off to Kenya where I will learn more about law and development while interning at RCK.

  One year after graduating?

  After traveling around East Africa I will return home to Seattle where I will work in the Non-Profit Sector and apply to JD and Masters in Pubic Policy programs.

  Ten years after graduating?

  I hope to be done with my PhD, running my own NGO, consulting for international organizations like USAID, and possibly teaching at a world class university like UW.

  Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:

  The honors program really challenged me to push myself academically and the professors were great mentors who helped me understand the direction of my future career and studies.

  Where do you expect to be...

  One day after graduating?

  Asleep for the most part, with GMAT and CPA review books in hand, on my way to Scottsdale, Arizona. Before my last "summer off" gets into full swing I'll be taking a quick spa trip with my mother to the sun!

  One year after graduating?

  Working (and living) in downtown Seattle with my CPA in the Forensics and Litigation Department of an international consulting firm, FTI. I hope to pick up my violin and pilates again, become an active alumna, volunteer for woman's advocacy, adopt a German Shepherd dog, and travel, camera in hand!

  Ten years after graduating?

  Completed a PhD in Management on the East Coast with a focus in Organizational Development, and working in innovation consulting or academia. In the Pacific Northwest I hope to design and build my own house, raise a family, create a personal library, and remain active in a life of service.

  Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:

  Every Honors course I have been privileged to participate in has challenged the extent of my world. The experiences have been rewarding: not only for the knowledge, but also the community of peers and professors willing to do battle daily against assumptions and, at times, each other. Thank you.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  I remind myself constantly that life's too short to be a wallflower. The first risk is incalculable, the second unbearably so, and the thousandth feels just the same. The only difference is by that time you know what joy can result if you allow yourself to admit your passions.

  One day after graduating?

  Frolicking in the sunshine in Seattle with my friends and family!

  One year after graduating?

  Next June, I hope to be working in Portland, OR and saving money to travel through South America - or maybe I'll have already left!

  Ten years after graduating?

  I will have published my first novel and I'll be touring the world promoting and speaking on my book! Dream big, right? No matter where I am in ten years or what I'm doing, I see myself being happy and surrounded by people I love.

  Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:

  Being in Honors helped make the UW seem smaller and friendlier. I enjoyed being in classes with dedicated and thoughtful students. Honors pushed me to think differently and challenge my own assumptions, and for that I am very grateful.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  Push yourself to take the classes that aren't up your alley or in your ordinary fields of interest - your worldview will undoubtedly change!

  I will be in San Diego for the University of California San Diego Biomedical Sciences PhD Program.

  I hope to be back in Seattle with a career as a research scientist.

  Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:

  The Honors Program has contributed to my well-rounded education, stressing interdisciplinary approaches to learning. It has allowed for a smaller feeling of community in the midst of a large university. I have met some great friends through Honors!

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  Take advantage of all the opportunities given to you to make the most of your college experience. It goes by fast!

  Participating in the College honors program allowed me to engage with a community of passionate and dedicated scholars as well as afforded me the opportunity to conduct independent research in Amsterdam.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  College is about more than simply academics--make sure you capitalize on the resources and opportunities on the UW campus! From undergrad research to study abroad, your extracirriculars will not only shape your college experience but you as a person.

  Indigenous Language and the Construction of Identity in Oaxaca, MÈxico

  Where do you expect to be...

  One day after graduating?

  One day after graduating I will probably not get the sleep I want but instead I will be spending time in Seattle with my whole family for the first time.

  One year after graduating?

  A year after graduation I will have completed a year as an English teaching assistant in el PaÌs Vasco in northern Spain. Maybe I will still be in Spain travelling or continuing my position, or maybe I will be home in San Jose, California, pondering my next big leap in life.

  Ten years after graduating?

  Ten years after graduating hopefully I will be done with grad school and have a PhD! I hope to be in a career that I love that helps society in some way and allows me freedom and creativity. I also hope to be spending quality time with my family and friends.

  Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:

  Honors has allowed me to take a great variety of classes that I am actually interested in. These classes have also been small enough for meaningful collaboration among the students and teachers.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  I would advice current honors undergraduates to take classes that they are genuinely interested in and get to know the teachers. The teachers are also genuinely interested in their topics too! Also talk to the advisers! They are very helpful!

  Wherever I am, I will be RELAXING!

  In some exotic land serving in the Peace Corps, or working in Seattle preparing for grad/law school!

  Ten years after graduating?

  TBA. Wherever I am, I hope that I am still having fun, and that by then I have a job!

  Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:

  -Studying abroad in Costa Rica with the Honors Program was one of the greatest experiences I've had in college. -Free printing in the Honors office was definitely nice...

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  Study abroad, make time for fun, take classes with Banas, Wolcher, and Herron. Try new things and be adventurous, this is the time to do it. Go talk to your professors, they really do want to help you out. Complete your Honors Thesis early. Get enough sleep!

  I went home for the holidays!

  I am moving to Washington D.C. in July to begin work for Senator Max Baucus of Montana. I anticipate that I will be there at the one year mark.

  Ten years after graduating?

  I hope to have completed graduate school or law school and have found a career well suited to my strengths and interests.

  Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:

  The honors program made me feel like the university was much smaller. I enjoyed the small class sizes and the thought-provoking discussions they fostered.

  Blame Attribution, Religiosity, and Abortion Attitudes: A Study in Sociodemographic Differences

  Where do you expect to be...

  One day after graduating?

  At my internship, looking through old Punjabi newspapers for incidents of anti-Sikh violence - and then home to relax!

  One year after graduating?

  Halfway through my travels around the world. I expect I'll be somewhere in the Middle East, full of hummus, way too hot, and planning my route to Southeast Asia.

  Ten years after graduating?

  I hope to have a Master's firmly under my belt for Public Health (or another field which will allow me to study women's reproductive well-being) and to be actively using my knowledge to enrich women's lives around the world. Or who knows - maybe I'll be working on an organic farm. Or as a baker!

  Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:

  Choosing Departmental Honors through the Sociology program was, I maintain, one of the best decisions I ever made at the University of Washington. Not only did it give me a sense of community within my own major, but it also challenged me towards new heights of academic exploration.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  Study abroad if you're able. It will challenge you in entirely new ways.

  The Honors program enabled me to refine my research interests and clearly picture a career pursuit. My lab was not only a place to learn about the research process, but one in which to practice writing, debating, and presenting my ideas - all critical skills for graduate school.

  Try to make sure you're enjoying whatever you're doing.

  I'll be working with International Community Health Services as a Community HealthCorps Member. As a patient navigator, I'll be working with the underserved Asian communities in Seattle. I'll also hopefully be looking forward to starting medical school in the fall.

  Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:

  Honors created the opportunity to take really interesting classes with wonderful professors and peers! It has allowed for a me to explore interests completely unrelated to my major.

  Do what you love to do and take time to find out out what you love to do! College gives you infinite opportunity to connect with others and explore your passions.

  I met my best friends through Honors and wouldn't have had such a positive experience without this community.

  I'm really happy I completed Departmental Honors in my majors...doing senior theses is difficult but very worthwhile. Also, being a peer mentor was really fun :)

  Having a picnic with my family and spending time with my two sisters. Maybe I'll even sleep in!

  Getting ready to head off to graduate school! Right now the choices are between Gender Studies with a focus on Public Policy, or Geography, or Social Work...I'm excited to figure this out!

  Ten years after graduating?

  Hopefully writing, researching, and teaching. OR, working in a non-profit organization. OR, living in Cambodia/Laos/France for part of the year doing research and working (for Unesco?!). That is so far away...

  Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:

  Honors has been central to my time at UW. The program exposed me to so many possibilities for new experiences, ways of thinking, and introduced me to countless talented faculty and students. I am thankful to have been a part of it.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  Though the years go by quickly, take time to try out things you've maybe never before considered. This is probably the only time in your life you'll be an undergrad, so take advantage of all the UW offers you.

  Let's just say that whenever I had a favorite class, there was a good chance it was an Honors class.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  Take a class with Marshall Brown if he offers it. And do not, I repeat, do not go through Honors without a class with Clark Speed.

  Honors made me think deeply about subjects I otherwise would not have studied, but were nonetheless very valuable to me, pushing me to be a more informed and critical citizen.

  Assuming I've scored respectably on the GRE, I'll be headed to graduate school. Or to Africa. Or to graduate school IN Africa.

  Ten years after graduating?

  Defending my dissertation for my Ph.D. in sociology. Looking for a professorship. Learning to speak a new language. Writing a novel, or a memoir, or both. Makin' out with my boyfriend, or girlfriend, or both. Being all postmodern and queer and loopy. Being in love.

  Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:

  Honors allows students to engage the University on a unique scale--it's manageable, because the Honors program is so intimate, but it's also more dynamic, in terms of academic depth. Honors has helped me to form valuable personal and intellectual connections, both with faculty and with myself.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  Take as many Speed courses as you can (I took five). Study abroad as many times as you can get funded to. Learn a new language, even if you're exempt from the requirement. Research, early and often. Stay up late. Engage your interests. Question your environment. Question yourself.

  One day after graduating?

  Taking a soldering iron to a harmless circuit board for purely recreational purposes.

  One year after graduating?

  In the UW Electrical Engineering PhD program, hopefully celebrating a recent success in the qualifying exams. Doing research in human-computer interaction. We use tech when we work, play, or socialize. Interfaces determine what we can do and how we do it. What if we made better interfaces?

  Ten years after graduating?

  Doing research!

  Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:

  Some days you have class in a lecture hall which is packed with hundreds of students on test day and half-empty the rest of the quarter. Other days you get to have an intimate dialogue with a motivated teacher and a small group of enthusiastic students who want a fun challenge. Honors was great.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  Worry less about what goes on your transcripts and more about what goes in your head. Dream big then work hard. Learn about anything that interests you even if it doesn't seem useful at the time, you never know what will give you a useful insight later. Don't panic and don't forget your towel.

  Specifically living in the Honors housing in Lander my freshman year was the best experience ever. I love the friends I made there, and I know I will remain friends with them long after graduating.

  I will be in a medical residency program, most likely for child psychiatry. At the same time, you can find me running around the world. My goal is to run on all 7 continents before I die (I'm 4 in). Did you know Antarctica has a marathon?

  The Honors College taught me to never quit the things that I'm passionate about, regardless of their relevance to what you think you want to do professionally. I've learned more about myself in the study abroad, clubs and classes that I didn't initially think were not pertinent to my career.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  Find your outlet for stress. Whether it's running, reading, traveling (those are mine), you will perform much better when you take the time to remove stress from your life. And keep this outlet consistent. Take 30 minutes a day, and do not leverage it for schoolwork. You will be much healthier.

  Living in the Bay Area with my family and dogs, retired after curing HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis. These achievements will make me so famous that my heroes Paul Farmer and Greg Mortenson will call me weekly to chat. In my spare time I will learn how to play piano and guitar and patronize the arts.

  The small class sizes were a huge benefit because they allowed me to get to know my professors and participate in meaningful discussions.

  Choose classes based on what sounds interesting rather than what requirement you need to fulfill; you will learn more and get a better grade if you truly enjoy the material. Get to know your professors. Engage yourself in larger university activities such as research or student groups.

  I hope to have made the move back home to Hawaii and working in an accounting-related position if I am still not in public accounting. Other than that, I hope to enjoy life in paradise with my family and friends!

  Departmental honors allowed me to further connect with my accounting professors through working with them on assignments and projects needed to complete the honors requirement. The program also allowed me the opportunity to push myself beyond the boundaries and to show myself what I am capable of.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  Do not be afraid to challenge yourself and to constantly raise the bar, you'll surprise yourself with the amount you can accomplish and how well you do. Your professors are wonderful resources that can offer you insight into the working world and provide you with networks beyond the classroom.

  Happy with my new-found career that involves environmental resources, economic development, and GIS. That of course means I'll be financially stable and hopefully I'll be able to move-out of my parents's house! I would also be making plans for my third trip back to Hong Kong and Tokyo!

  Continuing doing what I love. Hopefully I would have earned a Masters in either Public Health or in Public Administration from UW. I would want to have traveled to Europe already, and still be in contact with my friends from college!

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  STUDY ABROAD! It's the best experience you'll ever have! Even if it's for a quarter, a month, or even one week, you'll learn so much more about yourself, those around you, and other cultures! And try to take courses that are "outside" of what you usually enroll in- it's how I became a Geog major.

  My honors classes were always the most interdisciplinary and challenging. Students are thrown together from very different majors, which allows for a very diverse array of opinions. I believe this not only enlivens discussion, but strengthens conclusions.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  Be thorough and prepared and not be afraid to take courses outside of your major, or perhaps courses in subjects that you aren't necessarily the best at. It's easy to fear failure, but in the end the grades aren't quite so important as the experiences and how they shape one as a person.

  Choose classes that you love not just classes that look easy ot fit into your schedule. If you are intersted in a subject take the class! You will enjoy it more and get more out of it. Don't take school for granted, it seems hard now but four years flies by!

  One of my best experiences as an undergraduate was studying abroad in Rome with the Honors program. The honors curriculum was flexible enough to let me take photography, study abroad, and get a Spanish minor, which all really enriched my experience here.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  Take advantage of all the opportunities college has to offer! Study abroad, take classes you're interested in, do research, or play intramurals, etc...

  Nursing Honors has allowed me to make beneficial and lasting relationships with other honors nursing students as well as with nursing faculty. My honors research project has given me invaluable research skills that I hope to take with me and continue to expand upon in my nursing career.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  My advice for Honors students is to get as much research experience as possible. Also, take as many opportunities as you can to expand your learning and get to know the UW faculty, as they are an invaluable source of mentorship and inspiration. Lastly, in whatever you do, enjoy it and have fun.

  One day after graduating?

  I will be celebrating my graduation with my family and friends. I will also be packing for my trip to Europe in July.

  One year after graduating?

  I will have finished my first year of law school at the University of New Mexico School of Law. I will also be applying for judicial clerkships or summer associate positions in my hometown of ABQ, NM.

  Ten years after graduating?

  I hope to be using my JD and spanish fluency to help those in my community who cannot afford legal advice. I want to be working at a law firm where I am comfortable and have room to grow, both professionally and as a person. I also hope to be living in a house next door to my twin brother Jaren.

  I have loved every minute of the Honors Program. The classes I have taken and the professors that taught them have truly left a mark on me. I have been challenged both personally and intellectually and and look forward to bringing what I have learned to law school next year.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  Find something you are interested in and go for it. The workload is easier if you have a goal that you are working towards. Get involved with the Honors Community. I wish I would have done more of that, and it seems like a great outlet to meet people that are motivated and determined just like you.

  I traveled abroad to Rome, Italy and Amsterdam, Netherlands through the Honors program and that was hands-down the best summer of my life. I met some of my best friends, learned new cultures and languages, appreciated art in a way I never have before, and walked away a different person.

  Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?

  Work hard but make sure you find time to have fun--college is about building lasting and important relationships not just grades. You don't want to look back and say, "I wish I made more time to be a there when ___ needed me" because those sort of life experiences is what really matter!

  My experiences in doing departmental honors really emphasized the power of supportive feedback from advisors and those pursuing their thesis. It really was a learning time to be able to collaborate with faculty and professors and at the same time, study what I was interested in.

  Explore and check out what the UW has. Seriously. Lots of stuff going on, and try out new things! The IMA, the Ave, U District, all around Seattle, and all that.
