Beyond “Kinship and National Identity: Ika Hügel-Marshall’s Daheim Unterwegs: Ein Deutsches Leben”

November 15, 2019 @ 2:30 pm

Free

From Professor Anne Potjans:

“In my talk, I will look at the ways in which the presence of  mixed-race children of white German and African American decent born in Germany after the Second World War effectively challenged the prevalent concept of German citizenship and national belonging as consanguineous, ethnically homogenous or, more specifically, white. Drawing on Ika Hügel-Marshall’s autobiography Daheim Unterwegs: Ein Deutsches Leben (transl.: Invisible Woman: Growing Up Black in Germany), I will look at how concepts such as race, space, and kinship intersect and affect understandings of  citizenship and national belonging.”

Colleagues and students welcome!
