In 1995, three Filipina American women were murdered inside the King County Courthouse. One of them was a victim of human trafficking. In 2001, Dr. Sutapa Basu, Executive Director of the UW Women Center’s, convened the first-ever anti-human trafficking conference in Washington.
Building on the recommendations from that conference Velma Veloria (Washington’s first Fillipina American state legislative representative at that time) sponsored the historic HB 1175, making Washington first in the nation to criminalize human trafficking on a state level. Along with other advocates, Basu and Veloria thus began the Anti-Human Trafficking movement in Washington State, leading to a national movement to fight this violent injustice.
Join this free 45-minute online discussion with Velma Veloria (American Ethnic Studies) and Sutapa Basu (Executive Director, Alene Moris Women’s Center, Affil. Assistant Professor, GWSS) about their experiences and the shared work behind their upcoming 5-credit spring seminar at UW: Human Trafficking in an Era of Globalization: Forced Labor, Involuntary Servitude and Corporate & Civic Responsibility.
Their course will examine the root causes of the human trafficking industry and analyses possible strategies to prevent and minimize the trade. Course highlights includes essays, speakers and films on Forced Migration & Labor Rights, International Trade Agreements, Human Rights, Public Health, How to Improve Survivor Services, Ethical Sourcing & Sustainable Development, and Humanizing the Impacts of Human Trafficking.
This project is supported by the Honors Curriculum and Community Innovation Scholar award.
