PNW’s urban/rural divide (free/public)
March 23, 2021 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
FREE ONLINE COMMUNITY EVENT
The Olympic Peninsula is only a few hours from the Seattle metropolitan area. Yet traveling to the Peninsula from Seattle can sometimes feel like traveling to a completely different country. The landscapes are clearly different: one dominated by tall buildings the other by tall trees. So, too, are the cultures of these places. You’ll find differing takes on “environmentalism” and other seemingly polarized views between many Seattleites and residents in Forks, for instance.
Why, despite their geographic proximity, do places like the Seattle Metropolitan area and the Olympic Peninsula just feel so different? This talk attempts to answer that question and, in so doing, think about the origins and consequences of the urban-rural divide in the Northwest.
Join Daniel Bessner’s conversation* with Steve Beda from the University of Oregon on the history of labor and societal movements connecting to natural resources across the Pacific Northwest and within Seattle.
Tuesday, March. 23, 5:00-6:00 p.m., PST
