Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:
Being involved in research, and writing a thesis as an undergraduate was incredibly helpful and informative for my development and career aspirations.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
In my experience, the amount of knowledge and growth that one comes away with from any sort of undergraduate research experience or internship is largely a factor of the extent to which they take advantage of their mentors' knowledge and experience. Ask lots of questions and get involved!

...One day after graduating?
I will start packing my bags for Europe! This summer, I will be studying abroad with the Honors Program in Berlin and learning about how community organizations help refugees adapt to life in Germany. I'm very excited to travel with my classmates and visit a new city.
Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:
Interdisciplinary Honors ensured that I had a well-rounded academic experience outside of my major and minor. I liked being able to take a break from journalism and Spanish classes to learn about topics like global Shakespeare adaptations, the science behind pain, and Latin American activism.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Take advantage of the small sizes of your Honors classes. You'll have more personal connections to your professors and classmates, meaningful discussions, and opportunities to challenge yourself. If you don't feel comfortable speaking up in lecture halls like Kane, try it in your Honors classes.

One day after graduating I will be celebrating with my friends and family. I will also most likely be frantically packing to go abroad!
...One year after graduating?
One year after graduating I will hopefully be working in the field of global health in Seattle. I also plan on continuing to dance locally.
...Ten years after graduating?
My goals ten years from now our vague. For now, I hope that in ten years I have an MPH, I am getting to work in the field of global health in a way that I feel is impactful, and that I've gotten to travel. I hope to have a family, and be happy as the person that I am.
Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:
Honors courses gave me the opportunity to learn from incredibly passionate professors along side exquisite learners. Ultimately my Honors experience taught me how to be a better learner, a more critical thinker, and a more responsible citizen. I am grateful for that.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
My advice for current Honors undergraduates would be to take the classes and opportunities that interest them. Too often students get caught up in what they think they need to do, and miss out on delving into their passions. The classes I remember most are the ones that stretched my thinking.

Moving out of my U-District apartment and starting to pack for my summer backpacking trip around Europe!

I will be finishing up with my gap year job and getting ready to start my doctorate of physical therapy.

Hopefully I will be living somewhere in the PNW (or Norway) and working as a physical therapist. I would like to be married and (maybe) have a kid by then.

The Honors program allowed me to meet some amazing people who shaped my time at UW. I had the opportunity to add an interdisciplinary approach in to my otherwise very scientific career here.

...One day after graduating?
One day after graduation I will be at home in Battle Ground celebrating with my family and friends who helped me get to this point!
...One year after graduating?
One year after graduation I will be working as a teacher in Memphis as a Teach for America corps member, hopefully teaching first grade!
...Ten years after graduating?
I will (hopefully) have my law degree and will be working for the UN or a human rights organization, where I want to focus on international children's rights. By the time I'm 31 I'd also love to just be starting a little family and living somewhere close to my parents and siblings.

I joined the Honors department my sophomore year when I was struggling to find my place at the UW-- Honors completely transformed my academic experience at the UW by providing me the opportunity to engage with incredible professors in small seminars, perform my own research, and gain new friends.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
While the Honors community can seem competitive, try to actually get to know your cohort, especially if you are doing Departmental Honors! I met some of the most amazing and inspirational people throughout my time in the Honors Program who pushed me intellectually and gave me a new community.

Working as a physician and doing a clinical fellowship. I plan on staying involved in research and making an impact on social justice issues.
Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:
I am glad I did interdisciplinary honors because the humanities courses balanced the science I had for most of my years at the UW. I think my honors courses improved my ability to analyze texts, pushed me to become a better writer, and helped me reflect on my academic and personal experiences.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Reflect on what your values and interests are and get involved doing something related to them
Undergrad is very difficult -- make sure you take it easy on yourself when you fail and try to learn something from the experience
Find supportive friends to help cope with the challenges of college

Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:
The Honors program motivated me to challenge myself and maximize my undergraduate career. Without the Honors program, I may never have taken the classes which informed my current trajectory and fed my passion for social justice.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
You only have one undergraduate experience and you should make the most of it! Join lots of clubs, introduce yourself to new people, and take interesting classes; you'll never regret it and you'll learn a lot about yourself in the process. Also, remember to stop and breathe every once in a while.

I truly believe in the value of an interdisciplinary education, and I am grateful that the Honors college continued to encourage me to be open-minded to different disciplines and apply my knowledge in different fields in novel ways.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Try a little of everything (academically)! I still remember important concepts from my freshman Anthropology class, apply information from my sophomore Psychology class, and have used my statistics course to be more critical in analyzing data. All of it has helped me.

The Honors classes and communities I am proud to have been a part of these past four years shaped the trajectory of my undergraduate experience. I would not be the person embarking on the path I am today without the tools and opportunities Honors gave me to take risks and stretch my thinking. Ultimately, the Honors Program taught me the importance of critical self-reflection and introspection in finding a sense of purpose throughout my coursework and activities.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Embrace the "interdisciplinary" focus of this program to the fullest. Seek relationality and connections. In every class, find a way to connect the material to something you are passionate about, and then run with it. Some of the most fulfilling final papers, groups projects, and service learning experiences I had came about by sticking to this mentality.

...One day after graduating?
After my graduation ceremonies, I will be celebrating with family members visiting from California and Florida. This will be their first time back in Seattle since they dropped me off my freshman year and I'm excited to show them what I've been up to for the past four years!
...One year after graduating?
A year after graduation, I will be finishing up my first year as a medical student at UC Riverside's School of Medicine. At the beginning of 2017, I was accepted into medical school in my hometown with the blessing of a full ride scholarship as a Mission Scholar.
...Ten years after graduating?
Ten years after graduation, I hope to be completely done with my residency program and serving my community as an ObGyn. This might require more than 10 years if I decide to pursue a Master's in Public Health, which has always been an interest of mine.

Without the Honors interdisciplinary program and community, I would not be the well-rounded individual I am today. There is something so special about exploring a topic completely out of your field with peers from all different backgrounds contributing their own unique perspectives and experiences.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Don't limit yourself and take Honors courses that are out of your comfort zone! Learn something new, expand your perspectives, and continue challenging what you thought you already knew.

Having small classes with the most amazing professors, in a school as big as UW, allowed me to have a personalized experience that helped me intensify my passions and commitment to social justice. The Professors, staff and students all have had such a positive impact on my undergrad experience.

Be present, both in class and in your life outside of class. Four years of undergrad passes before you know it, so do not take any time for granted. Be reflective and always do what you are passionate about.

Honors has been an integral part of my journey at UW and made an enormous difference in how I see the world today. It has made me a better writer, thinker, and overall human through the diverse classes and incredible people. I'm so grateful for everything I've learned & everyone I've met in Honors.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Jump at this opportunity to take classes outside of your comfort zone because you will be surprised at how much there is to learn outside your major. Document your journey in college as honestly as possible, you will be really glad you did. Have fun and apply your learnings in the "real" world!

The Honors program has been a phenomenal experience that has enabled me to branch out extensively during my time here. I've gone on backpacking trips through Olympic National Park, toured gelato shops in Rome for a final project during my study abroad, and have met so many incredible people!
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
DO. There are just so many things to try, to apply for, or to choose in Honors that it can be kind of overwhelming; don't be afraid to go and try something totally unfamiliar, even if it's just one new thing a quarter. You'll learn so much, have great stories to tell, and meet fantastic people!

Where do you expect to be...
...One day after graduating?
One day after graduation, I expect to be celebrating with friends and family. We will probably explore and eat around downtown Seattle.
...One year after graduating?
One year after Graduation, I expect to be wrapping up my first year at the University of Maryland. I received a full scholarship to their psychology graduate program and will begin in August. This program will take about 5 years and will culminate with a doctoral degree in organizational psychology.
...Ten years after graduating?
Ten years after graduation, I expect to be working as a consultant or in-house researcher or industrial-organizational psychologist at a major corporation. Ideally, I would like to come back to Seattle and work at one of the local corporations, however it all depends on the nature of the job market.
Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:
Honors has been an arduous yet fulfilling program. It really helped prepare me for a graduate program after the University of Washington. For instance, it showed me the in's and out's of graduate school, connected me with successful academics, and provided me with valuable research experience.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Keep pushing and believing in yourself and your dream. Honors will be difficult and you will often feel stressed with non-stop revisions, lack of direction and major deadlines. The key is to keep moving forward and completing tasks one-by-one. If you can keep at it, you will be a successful student.

Where do you expect to be...
...One day after graduating?
One day after graduating I expect I'll be sleeping in and reveling in not having to get up early and go to clinical. Unfortunately, I'll also have to start thinking about studying for the NCLEX.
...One year after graduating?
I'm getting married this August and moving down to Texas where my fiance is stationed (he's a Marine). I hope to be working as an RN in the Cook Children's Hospital residency program and possibly becoming a Certified Pediatric Nurse after one year of continued learning and experience.
...Ten years after graduating?
Within the next ten years I hope to get either a Masters in Public Health or a Doctorate in Nursing. I hope I'm living in Bothell, Washington with my husband and kids, working as a family or pediatric nurse practitioner at a clinic near my home.
Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:
I loved having the opportunity to participate in nursing research! UW is such a renown school because of the research that is done here, and I'm really glad I got a taste of what that is like and got to partner with some of the amazing faculty in the School of Nursing.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Your undergraduate years go by so fast! No matter how busy you are, make sure to enjoy the college experience at this fantastic university. Go canoeing at the WAC, sit in the quad, and go to some Husky Football games!

The Honors Program and my 3-year stint at the Odegaard Writing and Research Center were the perfect pair. The practices in which I engaged as a tutor aligned so well with the learning goals established in my classes. I grew more as a writer, tutor, and student as a result.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Ask yourself more personal questions very early on, and be honest with yourself. Be honest about what you like to study, what you don't like to study, and what makes you truly excited. Devote effort to building strong relationships. Trust yourself more. Enjoy your time and do your best.

Applying what I learned in user interface design to work in digital history, particularly multimedia publication of historical research or user-interface design for archives or museums.
Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:
I appreciated the encouragement the Honors Program provided to try out new disciplines and to learn outside of the classroom, be it through study abroad, an internship, or research. This fostered an interdisciplinary view, helped propel me to take advantage of opportunities, and encouraged me to major in two disparate fields of study and to work to find the connections between them.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Don't compare yourself to others, especially those who seem like they have their whole college career planned out. It is alright not to know what to do or change your mind along the way. Try out new things, take advantage of new opportunities, and don't worry too much about uncertainty as you go along.

Continuing my work at a global health non-profit in Seattle and applying to graduate schools across the country. I want to find a program that allows me to combine my passion for health with my passion for policy.

Intersecting policy and health through research that informs sound policy decisions. I hope to be using economics as a way to evaluate policy and present these reports to state legislature.
Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:
Honors has allowed me the chance to make a big campus smaller. I have met some amazing and brilliant individuals that inspire me in the work they are doing and I have also had the chance to explore classes that I would have otherwise not been able to experience.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Take advantage of every interesting opportunity. College is what you make of it so I would advise all students to continue trying new things and pushing themselves so they can discover what makes them happy.

The Honors program is where I met my closest friends in college. I've taken some of the best classes of my undergrad in honors. My favorite experience was backpacking on the Olympic peninsula in 2014.

The Honors program prompted me to synthesize ideas across disciplines and brought educational balance to my college experience. This made me a unique problem-solver and allowed me to present a multifaceted perspective in my science courses. I am thankful for my diverse education!
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Use the Honors program to study abroad - whether on a Honors program or by ad hoc with another program. As a biology major, I would not have been able to study abroad without the help of Honors. It was by far the best experience I had as an undergrad!

Packing up my entire life and getting ready to move back to Minnesota, where I will (listed in order of importance): see my cats again, finish applying to medical school, and start a job as a medical scribe.

Finishing up my job as a medical scribe and traveling around Europe before hopefully matriculating into medical school.
...Ten years after graduating?
Owning at least 2 cats and starting a forensic pathology fellowship. Anything more specific than that is just a bunch of question marks.

Most importantly, the community I've found within the Honors program has played a huge role in making UW feel like a home. The classes I've taken have both challenged my worldview and allowed me to explore my interests, and I'm very grateful for the interdisciplinary setting Honors has given me.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Trust yourself. If that fails, forgive yourself. Find the bravery to be vulnerable, and you'll find that your community responds with openness and acceptance.

Honors has allowed me to play to my strengths while failing heartily in a wide variety of different areas. This failure has emboldened me to take steps on exciting new paths. I think that because of Honors, I am able to think critically and holistically at my University of Washington education.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Never stop asking questions, even when people hate on you for it. This reflective and self-reflective habit will expand your horizons and challenge your own perceptions of the world, ultimately leading you to question how you see life for the better.

I will no longer have three separate jobs because I will have made up my mind about what I really want to do and what I want to focus on. I will also most likely be attending the class of 2018's graduation as well!

I will have finally had the opportunity to leave the US and travel someplace I've never been.

Being part of Honors has given me a lot of confidence. The idea of being part of honors was initially very overwhelming, but I've been supported by so many great professors, advisers, and peers to just do it - and I did! Honestly, I feel like I can accomplish anything that scares me now.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Get to know your Honors peers! It took me so long to get to know my peers and go outside of the classroom to hangout, and they are amazing people. Again, I felt a bit insecure about hanging out with all these smart students in such a prestigious program, but they're just as weird and stressed as me.

As a wide-eyed freshman who was just trying to figure out where she belonged in the university, Honors provided me with a community of like-minded individuals that made that transition a lot easier. Over my three years, that community spanned, classes, events, friends, and roommates.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
If there's something that interests you, pursue it. You don't have to do everything at one time though, balance things out so you're not overwhelmed, but getting involved can help you learn if that's something you want to do more of, possibly professionally, or just for fun.

Being part of honors really allowed to me explore different realms of biology by doing projects, papers, and presentations. I got to interact with my professors more than I would have, and I explored really interesting topics that opened my mind up to how vast the field of biology really is.

These projects that you participate in are the places where you can draw your biggest connections between what you learn in class and what happens in the real world. Go and get your hands dirty- because it will prepare you for what is to come after graduation.

The honors program had an unbelievably important impact on my undergraduate experience. I met many wonderful people that helped me built a close community within this large university. I have learned many thing in Honors that go far beyond the material of my degree and for that I am so thankful.

Get as involved with the Honors program as possible! Honors offers many unique and fun opportunities to meet people and expand your community, so take advantage of them. Also get to know the Honors advisers, they are the best!

Honors has inspired me to diversify from always being in a scientific mindset when trying to understand the complexities of humanity. This has helped me recognize the value of thinking upon multiple modalities that push beyond rational lines.

Sometimes you just have to pause, take a deep breath, and think things through. If something doesn't work out the first time, keep testing, evaluating, and then retesting. Also, don't give up hope because if it was easy, then everyone would do it.

The Honors program in my department allowed me to find community and carve out an academic identity within my major. In retrospect, I can appreciate how the program molded my passions into ideas, then into questions, and finally into searching for answers-all alongside valuable faculty supervision.

The University of Washington is undeniably large in size; feeling like one in a sea of many is a relatable sentiment when you first start out. Stay curious and be intentional in your conversations, questions, and the challenges that you decide tackle.

Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. These four years will fly by and you'll definitely want to take advantage of every possible opportunity. It might be intimidating, but you'll learn, grow, and experience so much more.

Honors definitely made me think about myself and my future more than any other part of the undergraduate experience. Without it I don't know whether I would feel as certain in the type of person I am, and want to be.

Be open to change and new experiences. Sometimes the thing that frustrates and hurts and challenges you is the thing you end up needing the most.

Hopefully at a university somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, working hard for tenure as a professor of Political Science but still finding some time to spend with family, play music, and get outdoors.
Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:
My experience through Honors taught me not to be intimidated by tasks that seem overwhelming. I never would have read War and Peace, learned computer programming, or traveled across India without Honors challenging me to take on these adventures.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
When a mentor gives you tough feedback, it's because they believe in you! Don't fear criticism; ask for it, and trust that you're smart enough to take it in and use it to make your work even better.

I came into the UW not even knowing that the Honors program existed - a year later I was a late admit to the program, and 3.5 years later I can honestly say that Honors has shaped the most important projects and experiences of my college experience.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
If you have an idea - run with it. There's never quite a time like undergrad when we can all forge forward with our lavish ideas - take advantage!

Still working in emerging infectious disease research from a medical perspective, but hopefully for a little more money this time around.

Honors not only led me to the most transformative experiences of my undergraduate years, but also encouraged me to take full advantage these opportunities. From presenting my research to navigating the U-Bahn in Berlin, with Honors, I've taken risks that have led to a far richer college experience.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
It's fine to have a plan and it's fine to have a plan that doesn't work out. In fact, it's fine to have no plan at all. Flexibility and forgiveness are your friends.

Senioritis has been... difficult to contend with... thus, I would fully expect myself to be staring off into space for a few weeks post-graduation.
...One year after graduating?
Several options have presented themselves. I will either be working in a psychological clinical setting, or in a graduate program to gain licensure as a mental health practitioner. Also, traveling abroad, which I have neglected to do throughout my entire undergraduate career.
...Ten years after graduating?
I expect to be established within a private clinical practice, and also in academia as both a professor and research scientist.
Please share any comments you have on the impact that Honors has had on your undergraduate experience:
I feel that honors has afforded me the opportunity for individualized study within a field that I care about. An integral part of that process has been mentoring in more advanced and applied statistical and design methodologies than perhaps traditional classwork would grant.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
Get involved early, and do not be afraid to reach out to a mentor who interests you the most, even if their field is somewhat intimidating. Their job is to mentor you: demand that.

I will be feeling twenty-two and graduating with my Master's degree in Social Work with a Health Concentration at the UWMC Oncology Department! After 16 long years of going to school I will finally be done!

I hope to be financially stable to have my parents not work anymore. I want to be able to give back everything that they sacrificed & left in Ecuador in order to give their children a bright future. I also hope to work with youth at risk or homeless young adults that have been involved in the CJS.

I have been able to see so much growth from my first year here in 2014 and honors has been able to push me in ways I did not even realize was possible. It has given me he confidence I needed and has opened so many doors for me!

Make sure to set deadlines! And DON'T DON'T DON'T DON'T procrastinate if you will be doing research! Delegate all your work on specific days and months so you will not have to rush last minute.

Honors gave me one of my first communities at the UW and helped introduce me to college. I suddenly had a large group of friends, numerous interesting classes to explore, and something specific to look forward too. It helped define my college experience.

I'll be up in the mountains with my fiance and my dogs.

I'll be working in the Neurotheraputics Division in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital helping program deep brain stimulation for people with refractory mental illness.

Possibly still in an MD PhD program but hopefully soon on to residency.

I have had a fantastic undergraduate honors experience, working closely with staff mentors and developing proper scientific technique to research important questions about how we perceive the world. My research has been vastly improved by the rigor and integrity with which research is conducted.

Start looking for interesting research labs early and thoroughly and learn about the frontiers of science.

Realistically, probably finishing up a fellowship or residency for medicine. Right now I'm hoping that will be in trauma, ER medicine, surgery, or infectious disease. Maybe I'll be in Africa with Doctors without Borders! We'll see where the road takes me

Honors challenged me and gave me some of my best friends. But it also encouraged me to think outside the box and to be more creative. It's also help me be connected to a number of inspirational instructors and to the Bonderman Fellowship which has been the best experience of my life :)

Don't limit yourself, seek out new experiences and make new friends. Most of all believe in yourself- you can do it!!!

Don't be too rigid in planning for the future. Some of the most fulfilling experiences I've had here at UW have been rather unexpected. If an opportunity sounds interesting, pursue it and see what happens!

Honors took my majors and brought them together. It gave me the ability to apply my knowledge in the field, and it surrounded me with incredibly smart people committed to deep thought and interdisciplinary analysis. I'm so grateful that I get to use my Honors education for the rest of my life.
Do you have any advice for current Honors undergraduates?
After every quarter, sit down and write up that quarter for your Honors portfolio. DO IT. It will never be easier or fresher in your mind than in that moment, and you'll appreciate the level of detail later when you can look back later on a very well-preserved account of your time at UW!
