University of Washington Honors Program

Interdisciplinary Honors students are asked to think intentionally about their education, knowledge production, and connections between disciplines. They take Interdisciplinary Honors-specific courses that explore a variety of topics; complete experiential learning activities to apply their learning outside of the classroom; and practice critical reflection about their academic journey throughout their participation in this curriculum.

Students complete Interdisciplinary Honors requirements in addition to their major requirements, with Interdisciplinary Honors requirements primarily overlapping with a student’s General Education and Skills requirements or UW Elective requirements.

More About the Experiential Learning Requirement

Reflection & Portfolio

The Honors Portfolio is a collection of artifacts and reflections that document and contextualize a student’s undergraduate education. Your individual practice of reflection throughout your UW experience will be partially guided by Honors (required reflective prompts and assignments in classes) but mostly directed by you. Your portfolio should be unique to you, both in the experiences you write about as well as the artifacts you choose to archive. Between HONORS 100, when the portfolio is introduced and your first reflections are stored, and HONORS 496, when each student finalizes and presents their individual portfolio, we must see demonstrated engagement with the process, including the below:

  • Reflections from Honors classes
    • A minimum of 4 reflections are required to be submitted prior to being eligible to register for HONORS 496
  • Reflections from classes in your major(s)
  • Reflections from other classes
  • Reflections that consider challenges, not just showcase successes

College Honors

College Honors, the completion of both Interdisciplinary Honors and Departmental Honors, allows students to experience both broad, interdisciplinary inquiry and a deeper understanding of their chosen focus during their time at UW. To earn a College Honors degree, students complete both Interdisciplinary Honors and Departmental Honors in at least one of their majors.
