Goldwater Scholarship

Apr 29, 2009

The Goldwater Scholarship is awarded each year to college sophomores and juniors entering the fields of mathematics, science, and engineering. The Foundation awarded 278 scholarships from a field of 1,035 mathematics students who were nominated by colleges and universities nationwide. This year, Honors sophomore, Pranoti Hiremath, has been honored with this prestigious award. A bioengineering major, Pranoti is also a NASA Space Grant scholar as well as a Mary Gates Scholar. She currently conducts research in the UW Bioengineering Giachelli lab with Dr. Mei Speer and hopes one day to pursue an MD/PhD and conduct research in biomedical engineering, as well as apply clinical experience to research. She says of the scholarship, "The Goldwater scholarship means a lot to me, since it is a source of great encouragement and support. It brings me much closer to my goals. I am really thankful for the wonderful opportunities, people, and networks at the University of Washington, including the Honors program."

We are also proud to recognize Honors student Andrew Ishizuka who received a Goldwater Honorable Mention, as well as Honors students Matthew Becker and Rita Sodt, Campus Nominees.

Congratulations to all for your tremendous achievements!
