Jeanette M. Bushnell, PhD, is Pembina Band enrolled with Turtle Mountain Chippewa in North Dakota where her mother lived. Her father’s family came to Turtle Island in 1632 from France via England and his mother came from Ireland. Resistance and resilience run through these histories: her ancestors resisted as Huguenots in France and alongside Louis Riel in Canada. She continues this ethic, often with other indigenous women.  

Her scholarship is grounded in knowledges that have come from indigenous elder scholars, a PhD in Women Studies from the University of Washington, and students who have shared spaces and time with her.  

Her academic interests are wide-ranging, interdisciplinary, and from several knowledge systems.  Her current project is a book chapter that combines indigenous philosophy and game development.

In Honors, she most frequently teaches lovework: an unfinished syllabus – a course about how to live with a love-ethic, proposed by former graduate students, anchored on bell hooks’ All About Love, and named after her friend, Gabriel Teodros’ debut solo album, Lovework.
