Kristi Govella is an Assistant Professor in the Asian Studies Program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and an Adjunct Fellow at the East-West Center. Her work deals with economic and security policy in Asia, with a particular focus on Asian regionalism and Japanese politics. She is currently working on a number of projects related to economics-security linkages, regional institutions, trade agreements, foreign investment, maritime security, outer space, and cyberspace. She is also writing a book that examines how trade liberalization shapes firms’ interests and their corresponding political strategies through a cross-sectoral analysis of the Japanese political economy. Her publications include Linking Trade and Security: Evolving Institutions and Strategies in Asia, Europe, and the United States (2013). Prior to joining the University of Hawaiʻi, Dr. Govella was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University and an Associate Professor at the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies. She holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley and a B.A. in Political Science and Japanese, Cum Laude with College Honors, from the University of Washington.
