Graduate-level Credit Instructor Overview
Instructors Supervising an Grad Credit proposal
Thank you for considering supervising an Interdisciplinary Honors student’s Graduate-level credit proposal during your course. Interdisciplinary Honors students can earn credit for their requirements in some graduate-level courses if they receive instructor permission to enroll in the course. For more information about how Interdisciplinary Honors students earn graduate-level credit, please review the Honors Graduate-level coursework webpage. Please note that Honors Graduate-level Credit should not alter a student’s grade in your course; it allows the student to receive an “Elective” category for their Honors curriculum.
Our commitment to providing a diverse, flexible, and in depth education is not possible without your commitment to working with our students. We greatly appreciate your time and energy, and recognize the effort you will contribute to this Graduate-level coursework and to the student’s experience.
Students only need to receive instructor approval for graduate-level coursework if the course is a cross-listed (has both an undergraduate (4XX) and graduate (5XX) section).
By agreeing to oversee an Honors Grad Credit coursework, the instructor agrees to:
- Submit an initial online approval of the Graduate-level Credit proposal confirming your understanding that the student is planning on completing your course’s graduate level coursework (due by the quarterly deadline listed on the Honors Program webpage). If there is no difference between the graduate course and undergraduate course, you should decline the proposal.
- Communicate with the student about the expectations of your course’s graduate-level work.
- Evaluate the student’s Graduate-level credit reflection upon completion and submit final online approval/denial for Honors credit, verifying that the student completed the graduate-level coursework. See the below section for more information about the reflection.
Evaluating the graduate-level course reflection and submitting your final approval/denial
At the end of the quarter, students are prompted to complete a 300-word reflection to receive Honors Elective credit for their graduate-level course. As the instructor, we don’t ask that you “grade” the reflection for things like grammar or structure, but to use your best judgement to determine if the student’s reflection is an honest attempt at addressing the questions asked. You can find the reflection prompts in the Frequently Asked Questions section of the graduate-level coursework page, and they will be included in the reflection the student submits.
By approving the student’s final reflection, the instructor confirms that:
- The submitted reflection is an honest attempt at addressing the reflection prompts
- The student has successfully completed the graduate-level coursework that was agreed upon at the start of the quarter
You should decline the student’s final reflection/evaluation if one of the following is true:
- The student has not completed the graduate-level coursework that was agreed upon at the start of the quarter
- You feel that the submitted reflection does not address the reflection prompts. If you have capacity, you can ask the student to resubmit their reflection if they have otherwise successfully completed the agreed upon graduate-level coursework. The student should email UW Honors in this case so that we can reopen their reflection submission and allow them to resubmit. You are not required to accommodate a resubmission of a student’s reflection.
The student is agreeing to:
- Proactively communicate about the graduate-level credit proposal process, including initiating contact and being transparent about changes or difficulties.
- Manage the application and approval process with the instructor and the Honors Program and communicate about their own capacity to meet deadlines and expectations.
- Complete the agreed-on coursework during the quarter in which the student is enrolled in the course.
- Respect the learning objectives and expectations of the course and the Honors Program.
