I'm now a writer/filmmaker based out of Los Angeles!
A favorite Honors memory... I love all the cool Honors courses I used to take-- I remember creating a spaceship out of cardboard boxes with my group while giving an in-depth presentation on why space elevators were a viable means of transportation to the moon. The classes were always fun and intellectually engaging.

A favorite Honors memory... In one of our Honors science classes on evolutionary biology, we played a game where we got to create family structures and see how much of our genetic material we could pass on. We were short on men in the class, so I got to be a prehistoric philandering dudebro, and I won the game and it was a lot of fun. Also hanging out with the Honors/CHID crosspollinated folks, many of whom remain good friends!

boynton@uw.eduA favorite Honors memory... From 1980-2013 I occasionally taught an intro Honors course exploring a particularly fascinating thread in the history and philosophy of science: HA&S 220 Science, Magic, and the Passage to Modernity. Honors students were much more fun to interact with in the classroom than physics majors, for whom learning is such serious business that it renders joyous interplay between teaching and learning difficult to embrace. I have stayed in touch with a number of students since retiring and miss that fondly remembered classroom contact. Retirement has entailed little leisure time as I am working with my research group to publish the results of our experimental test of one aspect of Einstein's formulation of the physics of gravitation.

Something about me... I became a film studies professor (Indiana U 1975-90, UW Tacoma 1990-2015). As a faculty member at UW Tacoma, 40 years later, I started the UWT honors program. The experience actually reminded me of the early UW honors program in the 1960s! I'm married to Pam Keeley and spent the first pandemic year doing my 6th book translation for Columbia U Press. Love gardening, volunteer work, walking our dogs, and foraging medicinal plants.
A favorite Honors memory... My fondest memory is simply studying in the (then new) Honors lounge in (then new) Padelford Hall. You heard nothing but an occasional sigh, pages turning, and brain synapses firing around you.

kgovella@uw.eduSomething about me... The UW Honors Program was a key part of my college experience, and it has been incredibly rewarding to engage with it first as a student, then as a staff member, and most recently, as a faculty member directing Honors study abroad programs. I look forward to seeing how the Honors community continues to grow in the future.
A favorite Honors memory... In the early 2000s, former Honors Associate Director Ran Hennes always kept a bag of Junior Mints in the office that he graciously shared with me and Camden Davis when we worked at Honors. Those snacks were a lifesaver on many occasionsÑand they were always a good excuse to pop over to Ran's side of the office for a chat.

Benjamin.janicki@gmail.comA favorite Honors memory... The leadership class by Roger Soder was exactly what I thought Honors would be: twice a week we would read some great piece of philosophy from some ancient source, write a paper on it, and discuss the ideas in class. This honed my writing skills, introduced me to many old authors and fantastic ideas, and helped me get to know the perspectives of some of my fellow students. It expanded my mind. The two evolution classes by Jon Heron were similarly mind blowing. I already thought in these terms, about how our prior evolution as hunter gatherers influenced much of our behavior today, but these classes helped me to better understand how and why. Honors also had great Open Mic nights, ice cream socials, and bake-offs.

Something about me... After graduating from the UW, I continued to make my home in Seattle, and through friends, became more involved in the vibrant local arts and music community. This led to a sort of epiphany in my career - that I could build on my passion for arts and arts access into a career in fundraising. I joined a local public radio station as an intern and now, 14 years later, lead our Annual Giving program where we engage donors in building a community that celebrates and shares the power of music to inspire and change lives. Combining my love for communications and community-building, I deeply value how my experience at the UW led me down a fulfilling and creative career path.
A favorite Honors memory... I loved working on my honors English thesis with Professor Cody Walker. I think back on that experience as being so creatively fulfilling - one where I could dive deep into research and various interpretations of literature and build my own perspective on an author's work. Something about me... I'm a PhD candidate in the political science department at UC Berkeley, where I study the political psychology of white racial identity for ideological liberals. When I'm not reading, writing, or teaching, I'm probably running, doing a crossword, or singing with the Oakland Symphony Chorus.
A favorite Honors memory... Taking Galya Diment's course "A Big Book," which focused on War and Peace. As a budding political scientist, I loved applying my social science mind to analyzing such an important text of such a different kind. Now I see references to that book everywhere! I had many formative experiences as part of the Honors program, but that's one I know I would not have had if it weren't for Honors.

aleym@uw.eduSomething about me... I've found my professional home here in the Honors Program. I started working here knowing that I wanted to work directly with students and help them navigate their individual experiences here at UW, but not yet understanding how I would best do that. Honors has been an incredibly creative place to grow as an educator and my colleagues have worked alongside me as I went to graduate school, married my husband, traveled, and proudly raised two sons. I lead our advising services and believe that student services and academic counseling focusing on the whole student experience are an absolutely essential part of any thriving educational community. I am excited to be a part of what keeps Honors going and am looking forward to whatever is next!
A favorite Honors memory... Partnering with educators and students from around the country to create and implement our very first Partners in the Parks program in Olympic National Park was exciting. Blessing's description of Theodore Roethke's behavior upon hearing the news that he'd been awarded the Pulitzer has stuck with me over the years, how Roethke picked up a chair and threw it across the room. Something about me... Both of our daughters ended up raising their families in the Upper Midwest, so we started coming out to Minnesota and Wisconsin in the winter of 2005 and moved full-time in 2017. It was a rich life until November of 2019 when Yvonne, my wife, did not survive the impact of a car that hit both of us as we were crossing the street. Since her passing, my main focus has been on writing a memoir of our sixty years together and also assembling a coffee-table book of her paintings and my photographs.
A favorite Honors memory... For several years I taught "Brains, Consciousness, and Evolution," part of the entry-level course in science for non-science majors. Most final projects were in written form, but to me, the most extraordinary one was primarily in the form of a musical composition. The student wrote a few pages about Alzheimer's Disease, but what really mattered was the piano piece he composed to portray the onset of Alzheimer's in the husband of an aging couple. It opens with lyrical passages in which the two hands express their love by playing in perfect harmony. A couple of minutes in, you hear a single discordant note. As the piece continues, discord - mistakes by one of the hands - gradually becomes increasingly prevalent until it is all you hear. What could be more powerful! I still have the tape.

After getting an MPH from the University of Michigan and then returning to UW for medical school I am now a resident in family medicine in Missoula and plan to practice as a full-spectrum rural doc in a small mountain town in Montana when I'm done with my training in 2 years. With PNW roots I always loved the outdoors and over the last few years I have fully immersed myself in the backcountry. When I'm not working I'm usually backpacking, trail running, paragliding, mountain biking, rafting, or backcountry skiing. I love living in a small town where I can be so intimately connected to the nature around me while also challenging myself professionally in the clinic, hospital, and ER.
A favorite Honors memory... A favorite Honors memory... ItÕs difficult to choose, but one of my favorite Honors memories was being able to Zoom in as an alumni panelist for Honors 496, as it felt a bit like coming full-circle. Many of the seniors were struggling with the question of how to move into the world as college graduates in the face of the pandemic, and we had a very real conversation about how difficult it can be. One of the students wrote afterward to tell me how much they appreciated our discussion, and how encouraging it was to hear that sometimes itÕs the small reminders of why you love your work that can make the biggest difference. It was reassuring for all of us to be able to connect and recognize that weÕre in this together, and definitely was a moment that reminded me why I love teaching!

As the Channeled Scablands bear the closest resemblance to Mars of any spot on Earth, it was amazing to learn about how these channels were formed and how their formation informs our understanding of our nearest planetary neighbor.

A favorite Honors memory... I was in the Political Science Honors Program. I loved that it was a small group of students with a wide variety of political leanings who could share their opinions in a thoughtful and collegial way.
