emmajewellscher@gmail.comI am from San Diego, California, and am lucky that during my time at UW I've had the opportunity to passionately pursue multiple areas of interest. As a journalist my work has been featured in over 20 different publications ranging from the hyperlocal to international levels. My junior year, I was able to work full time in Olympia, Washington covering the state legislature, and in Freetown, Sierra Leone as a columnist. In between these jobs I was lucky to spend a spring in Rome, Italy studying religious institutions as part of a study abroad program. I've also had the opportunity to work on multiple sociological research projects, including as an employee for UW's Center for Evaluation and Research for STEM Equity (CERSE), as an intern for a study on substance use in military veterans, and on a study of my own which addresses structural inequality and power dynamics within the Greek Community. I've served as president of the Society of Professional Journalists, UW Chapter, worked on staff at The Daily UW for four years, and am a member of Gamma Phi Beta. In my free time I like to read, write, and spend time with my friends and my dog, Pigeon. After graduation I am working at a trade publication for veterinarians called VIN News, and afterward am applying to law school. I'm so grateful for the time I've spent at UW, and can't wait to see what the future holds!
