Proudest Moment: Serving as the editor for my JSIS Task Force report! Despite only meeting over zoom, our group bonded and produced more knowledge in 10 weeks than I ever imagined was possible. I’m proud to have pushed myself into accepting a leadership role that allowed me to learn so much from my peers.
Thesis: Covering Just Cause: U.S. Media and the 1989 Invasion of Panama
mayagreen555@gmail.comAt UW I’ve held two roles that shaped my experience. As a research fellow at the Center for Human Rights, I found a passion for freedom of information and archival research. Working as a writing tutor for intro-level Art History courses has both greatly improved my own writing and allowed me to encourage other students to explore the arts beyond just satisfying university requirements.
Writing my thesis over the last year was challenging and eye-opening. It allowed me to connect with expert faculty I wouldn’t have otherwise built relationships with and see many different ways to approach what initially seemed like a clear-cut problem.
For the summer after graduation, I’ll be continuing my work with the Center for Human Rights. In the fall will be moving to Madrid to work for the Spanish Ministry of Education as an English language and cultural assistant. I’m eternally appreciative for the professors, graduate student instructors, and staff who helped me grow and made the next steps possible!
