Marketing & English
Designation: Departmental Honors
Honors Grads 2020/2021
Proudest Moment: My proudest moment at UW was founding my RSO and see it grow in numbers over the years and host meaningful events that made a impact to cultural diversity. On top of that, it would be my summer internship working for the White House AAPI projects to better represent and promote the AAPI community during a time that's filled with fear and xenophobia to make a positive difference.
Thesis: "Extinction: The Bargain with Humanity - Climate Change and Social Marketing"
mengc12@uw.eduMengwei (Crystal) Chen was born in Kaifeng, China, and immigrated to Washington State with her family when she was eight years old. She is graduating with Departmental Honors this Spring majoring in Marketing and English. By using the narrative skills from English and packaging skills from Marketing, she practiced innovative campaigns such as "Selling Climate Change" with social marketing. As the Founder and President of the Ancient Chinese Association (ACA), she conceives that marketing shouldn't be limited to "products" and that it's possible to market a "culture." She believes miscommunication is a catalyst to a majority of the crises in this world, and her goal in the future is to enhance message flow and combat miscommunication for individuals, groups, and societies at large. Outside, she's also a motivational speaker who traveled to different high schools promoting students to seek higher education and ways to practice personal branding. In summer 2020, she interned for the White House Initiative on Asian American and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI), aiming to learn strategies to enhance the construction of narratives and other skills to better represent and promote the AAPI community. She's also worked as an advocacy intern at the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce assisting local projects and as an outreach specialist for the City of Seattle through ECCC. As a former competitive swim team member, she's very active and seeks the opportunity to go swimming during her spare time and other activities such as hiking and archery.
