Way more than a marine biologist
by Carey Christie
Kids meet Samantha-Lynn Martinez, and so can you.
One of the true joys of working at the UW is stumbling across amazing projects that highlight the talents and passions of our students. Honors students seem especially driven to seek experiences beyond their comfort zones, and to love sharing what they’ve learned with lots of people.
My favorite recent find is a short video produced for the HiHo Kids channel featuring our very own Samantha-Lynn Martinez, a sophomore marine biology major pursuing Interdisciplinary Honors. Give yourself a treat and watch it while you’re drinking your coffee (or just take a break from being productive and use the time to be curious).
“Wow,” you must be thinking, “Samantha-Lynn is great with kids. And she seems to know a lot about marine life.” So true! But that’s hardly scratching the surface of inspiring things.

When she’s not building educational tools and outreach programs within her major, Samantha-Lynn could be spreading the word about 2nd year admissions to the UW’s Interdisciplinary Honors Program or collaborating in one of her many homes on campus.
She might be out in the world, learning camera and drone skills on a “Wildlife Camerawomen” excursion with photographers and producers from National Geographic, the BBC, Disney+ and other media outlets.
Or maybe she’s making art and custom illustrations, like her project with the UW astronomy department, or this new UW Honors swag design:

I asked Samantha-Lynn if there is anything she especially wants to share with the UW community: “I’m currently most excited about on my ongoing personal project ScattrLab, where I’m practicing my skills as a scientist and communicator.” Click here to check it out.Note: Honors T-shirts, mugs, totes, etc. are available exclusively to our community partners and volunteers. Stay tuned for more about Samantha and other Honors Huskies to know. And email forcarey@uw.edu if there’s something you’d like to share!
